Summer moon

Since I'm a little behind on the August Break challenge and since the idea behind it is to get people to look and photograph the world around them, and since I am having a hard time going with the themes, I decided to just look around me and photography what peeks my interest.

We've had a lot of rain here lately which has makes for wonderful and at times dramatic skies.   These photos are of the moon on a cloudy night.  I love the sense of mystery that the clouds impart.

I tried different settings and used my zoom on my camera a Canon Powershot SX30 IS which produced a great variety of  looks and moods.

The clouds finally moved out of the way for a few minutes and I was able to get this clear shot of the moon.

Insomnia strikes again

See how nature - trees, flowers, grass - grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence...we need silence to be able to touch souls.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta

A couple of nights ago, I woke in the middle of the night; nothing real unusual  about that. Occasionally when this happens I get photo ops that I would normally never get; and this time was one of those times.  This particular photo is also thanks to Rascal, who normally sleeps quietly through the night, but this night he had to go, bad, and was whining to go out.  There was this wonderful moon outside, just a sliver but the night was so crisp and clear even the dark side was visible.  I just had to try to capture that image, through adjusting the aperture and exposure, putting the camera on a tripod and using the delayed timer I was able to capture this photo.  Not perfect but pretty good considering I only have a bridge camera.
I wish I had the words to convey the wonderfulness of that night.

Crisp, clean, clear
Air surrounding me-
Profound silence
Blanketing me-
Only an owl
Occasionally
Quietly hooting-
Peace enveloping me.
Wonderful awakening

Moonlight in daylight

These pictures were taken tonight just before sunset.  I still think it is odd to see the moon during the day even though I have seen it many times.  Tonight though I was fascinated by the moon being on the horizon and the clouds were creating interesting shadows on the moon.
For some reason It reminded me of the children's poem Bed in Summer by Robert Louis Stevenson.  Don't know why exactly, maybe because it seems odd to see the moon in the day to me, much like the child's question in this poem.
Robert Louis Stevenson
Bed in Summer
In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people's feet
Still going past me in the street.

And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day?

Another  Moonlight in Daylight photo taken tonight.

Have a good evening and good night

Shining moon

"Meditate.
Live purely. Be quiet.
Do your work with mastery.
Like the moon, come out
from behind the clouds!
Shine"

Franken Moon

“See how nature - trees, flowers, grass - grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence...we need silence to be able to touch souls.”

Mother Teresa of Calcutta quote
Last night was a special kind of moon, the closest it will be for a long time.  It is supposed to cause all kinds of havoc.  Wife's tales and all that, exagerating science, yes the moon does cause the tides but when we're talking the kind of distances between here and the moon the effect may be felt but cause havoc, nah.  It was however very cool to look at.  When it came up over the horizon it was big and golden and extremely impressive.
As the moon rose into the trees it lightened in color and started to look like something out of a spooky Hollywood movie.

As it rose in the sky, it lightened in color and looked more like a regular full moon.  I hope your skies were clear and you were able to enjoy this special moon if not I hope you enjoy my photos. I have a feeling there will be a lot of blogs with moon photos today because it was indeed impressive and there were lots of fellow photographers out there taking photos.  I had people who saw me; stop in the middle of the road to tell me where better shots could be had.  I met and talked with several other photograpers and had one invite me to park in her yard so I would be well off the road instead of in the grass just off the road.  It was one of those nights that my faith in people as being good, decent, freindly, all those things that have supposed to have diminished in the world are not gone and it warmed my heart.  Perhaps that was the best part of the night.  Some wonderful Serendipity

Moonlight in daylight

Mother Teresa of Calcutta quotes (Albanian born Indian Missionary and Founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity. Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979. 1910-1997)
These photos were taken this morning.  The sunrise was not so great so I turned around and serendipity saw the moon still in the sky amongst the clouds and trees.  So pretty.
Enjoy

Mirage- moon though pine trees

Tom gave me the idea of making a copy of the moon, I liked it but decided that duplicating it again might look better. I did indeed like it better. However in the 8x10 format the copy was too far away so I went back and cropped it so that the copies would be evenly spaced. I really liked that a whole lot better. I experimented with the border and found out how to round the corners to echo the shape of the moons. I had found on Amazon.com a Dummies book for my editing program MGI PhotoSuite where I found how to duplicate the moon. I am working on my goal for Dec and learning and finessing my photos even if it's only one or two photos a day.
