See the beauty

I named my blog young-eclectic-encounters because I have many different interests and experiences to share.  Although I do tend to be easily bored and have a little ADHD you will find that there will be common threads throughout my posts.  As I mentioned in my last post I have been working on improving my health and have found this to be a fascinating subject, so there will be lots of these.  I am also a lover of good books, as I have learned much from them, both lessons from life and information to improve my life.  Most of what you will see is my artistic strivings.  I draw, paint, art journal, quilt, design my own clothes, but my first love is photography so you will be seeing lots of photos.
My description for my blog is "See the beauty- a survivors art journal" more than anything else learning photography has made me really look around to find the beauty that surrounds me.  It has kept my spirits high, fought off depression and generally kept my life hopeful and moving forward.  The photo above is a good example of seeing the beauty around me.  I saw these beautiful roses on trip just out running errands.  I enjoyed them then and am enjoying them now having captured their beauty with my camera.  But, guess where I found them?  They were part of the drive-thru at Burger King.
How much do we miss of this beautiful world when we go about our daily lives?  Did this person in the car even notice the roses? Think about this over the next week, notice, share you observations in the comments or write a blog post about the beauty that surrounds us and share it in the comments, too.  One other thing I have found is that when we share the beauty of this world with others we help to make this world a more welcoming place and we humans much more cheerful.  So join me and encounter this world it's many beauties and pass the word.
Enjoy

Happy Mother's Day

Every year my family works on my front flower garden, rearranging plants, planting annuals and generally setting up my garden for a new year of beauty.  This tradition has brought me years of joy as every time I go out and come back home; I am greeted by beauty that my family has created for me.

I have been missing from the web for several months now due at first from problems with our Internet provider, which took several months to even get them to realize that we really did have a problem.  They kept telling us every thing was fine.  We kept after them and finally got a tech who found a problem, fixed it, sort of, but we continued to have various problems.  After being a squeaky wheel for weeks on end and several different techs later we now have a temporary fix.  The Internet is now fairly stable, but it is still on a temporary basis. (Roll of eyes)

Anyway I decided to come back to the web today despite the temporary nature of our fix to share with you the beauty that greets me as I return home.
Hopefully this will be a good welcome back to the web as I greet you with the beauty that greets me daily and continue to share with you the beauty which part of my life.

Enjoy

Ding, Dong the glitch is gone...

the wicked glitch is gone.  I've got my computer back and it is working so much better.  Hooray! for the Geek Squad.  Just in case you don't recognize the parody in the title; your really need to get hold of the Wizard of Oz DVD.  One of the all time greatest classic movies ever.
Anyway my computer's working better.  My new programs are installed and I have two new editing programs to play with.  I'm so excited.
Emily is going great.  The doctor is very pleased with her recovery.  She spent last week learning how to teach freshman English.  She said that instead of sprinkling them with knowledge; they used a fire hose.  This week she starts working on her Masters degree and teaching freshman English class on her own.  Well, sort of on her own; BYU provides plenty of support and their attitude is you are here to get your Master's degree and teaching comes second.  She has also found a study buddy who is doing the same thing and they have agreed to help each other.  Good deal for her.
I have recovered from the stress of the last couple of weeks.  Due to the fact that I have Addison's disease; it takes me a long time to recoup.  Having Addison's means my body does not make the hormones necessary to cope with stress be it good or bad.  It has caused my electrolytes to go kind of haywire, my blood pressure to drop dramatically and just those two things can make anybody so weak that walking more than a few steps makes them feel like they are going to fall on their  face.  There is so much more to what the stress hormones do that sometimes I do get discouraged.  Even with all my varied health problems this is the worst and makes the stress of my other problems so very much more complicated.  This is an orphan disease which means there are not enough people with it to warrant research.  It's the pits.
However I am learning to deal with it better and better.  Not near as many hospital visits as I am learning to deal with it at home and I have a PA who is helping me through the process of learning to deal.  How grateful I am for modern medicine.
Between Emily and I we have truly learned the miracle of modern medicine and a miracle it has been in our lives lately.  Add to that the prayers and support from those around us and our lives have been so very richly blessed.
We are both alive and able to continue to see the beauty in this world in which we live.

 Enjoy

Morning Glories

Thomas Fuller quotes (British Clergyman and Writer, one of the most prolific authors of the 17th century. 1608-1661)

Sometimes there is a fine line between flowers and weeds and sometimes it is hard to tell the difference.  Some of my herb plants look like weeds but they are wonderful smelling and tasting and add so much pleasure to the other senses.  Some weeds are beautiful and add vibrance to the landscape, but choke out the useful plants.
Even though these Morning Glories are really pretty flowers they are none the less a weed here in Georgia.  They are so invasive that they will choke out all other plants, useful or not.
As you can see from this photo of my veggie garden the Morning Glories have indeed taken over.  This picture is simply the same picture as the one at the beginning of this post just taken from a different angle where the weediest shows.
I was just going to post the top photo with a short quote on flowers and weeds, but in seeing these two pictures and remembering why I started this blog in the first place I expanded this post to use my photos as a way to show about my survival of all the things that I have been through, both the abuse of my younger years and the struggles with health problems of my more recent years.  As a way of expressing what it means to me, what I've learned and how I've learned to see the beauty in spite of the struggles.
Growing up in my household meant living with the unwritten rule of 'Make it look good to the world'.  Much like the  top photo only the good was to be seen.  It was incredibly hard work and those who knew me as a child never knew of the abuse that went on behind closed doors and most still don't know unless they read this post of course.
Then there is the second picture that was just taken from a different angle that shows how this beautiful covering is in reality strangling and taking over the garden.  That beautiful covering that masked the problems and kept me from growing, being productive and getting the sunshine, the help, I so desperately needed.
In spite of the struggles I have learned to see the beauty of the things that I learned, the strength that I have gained and the gratitude for being alive.
Since I got a late start on my garden; I have planted some Morning Glories on purpose in my front garden because they are pretty and fast growing and will cover my trellis quickly.  I was cautious when I planted them, planting them in a pot and setting it on plastic.  I have indeed conquered the weed; tamed it using what I have learned and am enjoying the beauty that it can provide.

Beautiful Morning- Lights and Shadows

Beautiful morning
sun shining
through the
still darkened woods,
peaceful noise
birds singing,
owls hooting,
frogs croaking,
crickets chirping,
warm
not yet hot
pleasant
brilliant green
against
dark green
many patterns
On my walk this morning
thinking about the people
who have come into my life
and changed my life
I spyed the beautiful patterns
on the leaves
each with it's own
individual beauty
that shines through-
the shadows of those around
changing and making
more and more
patterns
enhancing beauty-
How much we are
like these leaves
each with our own
patterns and scars and shapes
with our beauty enhanced
by those around us.

ENJOY

Springtime encounters

I don't know if spring has sprung with more zeal this year or if I am just noticing it more, but either way this spring has given me many photo ops.  I see spring and it's beauty everywhere.  I have been enjoying it and I have concentrated on finding the beauty around me as I have been sick for so long.  I believe that beauty and nature heals.  Now that I am feeling better I have had the time to edit some more photos to share with you.  I hope you enjoy them.

First frost

I love to go out first thing on cold frosty mornings when there is frost on the ground.  There are so many different patterns of frost depending on how cold it is and what plant it is on.  This is one of the advantages of walking the dogs first thing in the morning; you get to see the pristine frost with the morning light shining on it making it sparkle.  When the kids where still at home and it was their turn to walk the dogs in the morning all they did was complain of the cold.  I never could teach them to look down and enjoy the beauty of nature beneath their feet.  One of my regrets.

As you can see the frost on these blades of grass are very different from the frost patterns on the dandelion leaves above.  Before I got my camera and was out walking the dogs I could look and appreciate the beauty there, but now with my camera I can get much closer, save the images and play with them.  The original photo of this was pretty with it's pastel coloring in the middle but I didn't like the darker green surrounding it, so it took the pastel part and duplicated it over the whole picture and made an abstract piece of art, which I liked much better.

I really liked this picture of the sparkle that the frost creates in the early morning light.  I did punch up the sparkle a tad as an experiment and am pretty pleased with the way it came out.  It was actually more like I saw it than the camera could capture.

This is the same photo as the top one.  I just had fun making it in a little more impressionist style, although I think next time I would go a little farther with the impressionistic style and frame it.  I don't remember where I got the suggestion to look down and enjoy the beauty there but I sure am glad that I did.  Now that I have a camera I can extend that pleasure and share it with others. Have a pleasant day and try looking down to see what beauty may lay there.                                                                                                ENJOY   Johnina  :^A

Sorry sometimes I get down

Step by painful step
Pain, pain and more pain
Times of down spirits.
Diagnosis after diagnosis
When will it stop?

Lack of color in my life.

New day, color coming back.
Some dark, some light.
Beautiful contrast
Take a look
Enjoy

Taking baby steps back
Learning, coping, lifting spirit.
  Can always come back
To see the beauty of life.
Color in my life.

I am always in pain for me it is a matter of degree.  For the last couple of days my pain level has been extreme. I have pretty well learned to cope with pain and be able to see the beauty of the world.  Most people do not know that I am in pain all the time.  A couple of years ago I remember an afternoon of being pain free but other than that I don't remember being pain free.  Even on narcotics I am not pain free and believe me I know if I forget to take them.  On a scale of 1 to 10 my pain doctor and I try to keep my pain level under 5 and I have learned to cope pretty well at that point; not too much pain and not too groggy.  It's when the pain goes above 9 or stays above 8 for more than a day that I have a hard time.  My pain level has been above 8 for about 4 days now.  I went to the ortho doctor yesterday and he told me that my knee swelling and hurting could go on for another 6 to 8 months.  I really don't want this kind of pain for another 6 to 8 months even  if it is off and on, and that's just the point at which he would start to worry it could go on longer.  I told him about the vitamin d deficiency and the pain in my shin and he was real concerned about my having a stress fracture.  He had an x-ray taken; no stress fracture but calcium deposits in the muscles in front of my shins.  He said he didn't know what was causing them but they could be very painful equivalent to a stress fracture.  He also said that I now needed to be careful with my exercise so that I don't get a stress fracture and to come back immediately for an x-ray if I have any increase in pain. Between the pain, the doctors concern over fractures AND a new diagnosis I am feeling quite overwhelmed.  when I got home I started to research calcium deposits and the causes. None of the causes where pleasant and most of the causes required a different doctor to diagnosis it.  I could spend a lot of time and money just getting the cause so a treatment can be started. BIG TIME SIGH.
I've kind of resorted to chocolate, ice cream, caffeinated non-diet soda, and TV as comfort foods and distractions.  I even went so far as to watch SYFY movies. Actually I kind of like them they remind me of the B-movies I used to watch as a kid on TV or at the Dundee theater for 50 cents.  Then at college the good old 'Creature Features- Fiendish tales of......' where everyone would gather in the dorm lounge to watch, with bowls of popcorn, camaraderie, and where I learned to make no-bake cookies during commercials.  Also with SYFY movies you never know whose going to die sometimes a good guy will bite the dust while the bad guy goes on living, sometimes the sweet couple survives, and sometimes like the one I just finished watching where the monster ape killed everybody.  I don't often watch these movies i have to be in the mood which I must be because I'm on my second one (Halloween marathon)Sigh
I did get up and take some pictures this morning which did sort of get me a baby step in the right direction and the picture and poem above are the result of that baby step.  Hopefully tomorrow will be more and bigger steps back to seeing more color and beauty

Ups and Downs and Elephants

Yesterday I got up feeling pretty good and excited about going to get my newly fixed camera.  I got my breakfast.  Rascal made sure that I got my walk in.  I had a nice chat with a friend on Yahoo Messenger I don't have many friends on there yet but I am enjoying learning how to use it.  This friend in particular is always pleasant to chat with.  Even with all this I was clean and fresh and ready to go when Tom was.  Since we had to go to Fayetteville we ran other errands, but when we got my camera I was so excited.  The lens was so beautiful, so clear, so shiny;  I hadn't realized how scratched my lens had gotten and I couldn't wait to see what a difference the new lens was going to make.  On the way home we made a little sidetrack to get a picture of the Griffin Elephant.  In the south at one time Kudzu was planted to prevent erosion along the roadsides.  Unfortunately it is VERY invasive and grows over everthing.  It will grow over some pretty large trees; softening the look and making them kind of cloud-like and quite often you can see shapes in them.  This one just happens to look like an elephant running down the side of the road.  Immediately after viewing the photos I saw how much clearer the picture was even the colors were clearer.
When we pulled into the driveway butterflies scattered as we parked the car.  My cypress vine attracts them but they don't often let anyone get close.  I did happen to capture this one.  I didn't have a lot of time to take photos as I had a doctors appointment and still had to eat lunch, besides the batteries were not fully charged and were about to die on me so I had to stop even though I would have loved to continue to click away.
When I got to the doctors office I was sweating badly; usually this means low blood sugar or a start into shock.  Went in had low blood pressure,  when they used the pulse/ox meter my heart was pounding and my oxygen level was 90. Nothing was really bad but it wasn't good either.  They had me do some deep breathing and shaking and rubbing my hands and my ox level went up to 97 which kept me out of the hospital ER.  This was probably due to the Addisons and my body was short of steroids. Stress is stress be it good or bad and in this case the good stress was getting to me.  Talked to the physician's assistant about my knee and the continued swelling and pain and was told it could continue for six months to a year.  She also agreed that since I have had a vitamin D deficiency for so long I probably did have soft bones, I was tested for osteoporosis and did not have a problem there.  But soft bones is not easy to diagnosis mostly it is through a vitamin D deficiency and bone pain and could have been one of the reasons for the extra pain that I have had.  This could also take six months to a year to heal.  Meanwhile I have metal pressing down on soft painful bones.  Much more pain than bone on bone at times.  I also no longer make my own endorphins so the pain levels are higher for me anyway.  By the time I left all I wanted to do was go home curl up and cry.
But I didn't, I read in "The Sound of Paper" by Julia Cameron where she is talking about her and a friend living in places they do not like and she gave me a new perspective.  I may not like where I am physically but this is where I am and I have to work with it.  This is what she said
"It is difficult to commit to living where we are, how we are.  It is difficult and it is necessary.  In order to make art, we must first make an artful life, a life rich enough and diverse enough to give us fuel.  We must strive to see the beauty in where we are planted, even if we are planted somewhere that feels very foreign to our own nature.  In New York, I must work to connect to the parts of the city that feed my imagination and bring me a sense of richness and diversity instead of mere overcrowding and sameness.  In California, my friend must work to do the same.  If we are not willing to work in this way, we become victims.  If we become victims, we first become choiceless and than become voiceless.  Our art dries up at the root.  We must, as the elders advise us, bloom where we are planted."

So this morning I decided to go out and find some beauty to enjoy and to share.  My first stop was to my winter garden where my winter veggies are coming up; radishes, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, beets, and salad greens.
I than turned toward our backyard and the woods freshly lit by the morning sun.

Our small woodpile complete with spiderwebs and the first of the autumn leaves trapped in amongst the cut up wood.

Pine cones on the woodland floor caught in the early morning light.  Beautiful in the soft light and deep shadows.

And more beauty at my feet.  I was so glad to have rediscovered Julia Cameron and to found this book at the library.  It has helped to put things back in perspective for me, helped me to once again find the beauty in the world and once I find the beauty in the world I see the beauty in my life.

Scene while walking the dog

I think quite often we take for granted the beauty around us everyday.  While walking the dog and enjoying the early morning sunshine with it's dappled shade, it occurred to me that I had gotten out of the habit of sharing everyday pleasures.
I am also a firm believer that when you put good out you get good back.  I just got finished reading Dan Brown's "Lost Symbols" and the scientist in it was working on proving that people can influence the world around them by their thoughts.  Dr. Wayne Dyer also puts forth this idea in his books and the title of his book that I am currently reading "The Power of Intention" really puts forth his belief in the power of one's thoughts to influence one's life for good.  I have put some of his principles to work in my life and seen the results and delightful they have been.  I also believe that just putting out good thoughts and sharing the good in one's life bring good into one's life.  Serendipity in principle and action.
I have also found that the good that comes into one's life also comes when you are ready. In finding the book on vitamin D ("The Vitamin D Solution" by Dr. Michael Holick) not to long ago I would have ignored it, because of all the things listed on the front that it was supposed to cure or help.  It sounds to good to be true and things that sound to good to be true usually are. However, I have had so many experiences lately with one hormone or medicine helping or throwing off lots of different parts of my body that I was willing to read it.  I have learned a tremendous amount from this book and one of the most important is the fact that vitamin D is not a vitamin but a hormone and a type of steroid at that; which is why it effects so my systems in one's body.  Since I know I am indeed deficient in vitamin D I am doing my best to follow the suggestion in this book.  Right now I am sitting under a UVB light so my skin can produce vitamin D. Even finding out I was vitamin D deficient was a matter of serendipity,  finding the info when I was ready and having others ready to help along the way.

I hope you enjoy some of the beauty I found while walking the dog.
Please leave a good thought or experience from your life in the comments so you can join me in passing good around the world.
